Treehouse Playground Helps Children Heal

This treehouse playground is helping children recover from Yolanda.

When Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines on November 8, 2013, it clocked in as the country’s deadliest ever.  It was the strongest storm to ever hit land.  It traumatized many, including children.  In order to help them get over their fear of water and renew their youthful spirits, Sagkahan Elementary School in Tacloban had a playground built.

“After the storm hit, the children would cry whenever it rained,” says school principal Niceta Lirios-Galura.

What does all of this have to do with treehouses?, you might well be wondering.  Here’s what: the playground features a treehouse, whose elevation helps the children feel safe from the storm waters they fear will resurge.

Principal Niceta Lirios-Galura reports that the first day of this school year had 100% attendance compared to previous years which only had 80%.  She credits this to the newly-built treehouse playground.

Water play provides therapy for Tacloban children.

The treehouse playground is being used as a form of therapy for the children to process their experience and enjoy being children again.  The treehouse playground includes a water play area. By restoring their sense of play, the children are starting to recover from their fear and trauma.

Student Marlyn Gandia captures the magic she’s discovered in the treehouse playground: “It’s wonderful because when you slide down, it feels like you’re going very fast.  And the swings make you feel like you can reach the sky.”

As this video shows, the smiles are definitely returning to their faces.  It just goes to show that a little treehouse goes a long, long way.
