Historical Tree Trunk Rolling

These sections of tree were so big, it wasn’t really possible to drag them out like standard timber. So, they would roll them out using cables and horse teams.

Sometimes, they would purposefully shape a round section to act as a roller — you can see in this image that they’ve smoothed the ends to form a cylinder they could use as a giant ball bearing. They could position a large log on top of this roller and pull it over land with a minimum of effort.

Standing on top while the beast rolls is a job reserved for only the most manly of lumberjacks. Of course, it’s all fun and games until someone falls in front of the log.
